A Weekend of Great Sadness

I write today with a spirit of extreme sadness we all recover from the shock of the Colorado shootings. I normally use this blog to relate religious themes, today I break that tradition some what to comment of the sad events of Saturday morning.

First, the people who are gun nuts will not like to hear this but I firmly believe that assault weapons should be banned from civilian use.  They serve no purpose other than to kill and maim as demonstrated here.  I am not going to split hairs about whether the weapon was modified for automatic fire or not. The fact that the idiot who perpetrated this atrocity had a one hundred round magazine for his weapon and even if the weapon was semi automatic he could do much damage with it as he did.  Assault weapons in civilian hands have to go.

Second, the boob was wearing body armor and riot gear.  I know we live in a free society but products such as these should be subject to control.

Finally, I know that we cannot know what our neighbors are thinking but we as a nation need to wake up and watch for there are dangerous people out there.

I pray that God in his mercy grant peace to the families that lost a loved one in this senseless murder spree.  I pray also for the wounded that they may heal swiftly.   I pray to see justice done to James Holmes and I cannot at this time ask Him to have mercy on his soul.

  1. "Assault weapons" are an arbitrary class of firearms that don't really exist except for those who are clueless about guns. Seriously. A prime definition of an "assault weapon" in military parlance is "fully automatic or select-fire, medium-caliber weapon" - in other words, a MACHINE GUN that can fire in bursts or on full-auto. It's not defined by "how mean it looks."

Also, you would want to regulate/control DEFENSIVE ITEMS? Why? What harm can they possibly do to anyone? How, exactly, do you hurt someone by wearing a bullet-resistant vest?

    1. Hello Aaron, thank you for your comment. I may not know guns (I was taught to call them rifles actually) but I do remember the video of the police taking cover I believe it was in Los Angeles, where the robbers wearing bullet proof equipment fired hundreds of rounds at the police. I think that is what I was thinking when I said that they should be controlled. Secondly, the term assault rifle is used as a common description of various weapons used by the military which have the capacity to fire automatically and the weapons that are kissing cousins of these same firearms that are built for civilian use. The AK-47 is a selective-fire, gas-operated 7.62×39mm assault rifle used by military the world over. It's civilian cousin as sold in the United States is sold as a semi automatic in accordance with the law. I understand that the civilian version cannot be retooled to automatic. BUT - the AK in its almost endless variations is the most popular rifle in the world and the military version is readily available to those with the cash to pay for them and I understand that as far as rifles go they are not too expensive. My point is simple, let's keep these weapons in the hands of the military. There is no valid reason why a citizen would need this kind of firepower in hunting or target shooting. Let's make it harder for the criminal classes by making it illegal for a convicted felon to own not only a gun as today but body armor as well by requiring a security check before purchase just as we do for firearms. True, this would not have stopped the senseless violence that occurred that sad Friday night but maybe, just maybe, some of the nutcases and criminals which America seems to have an endless supply of, will be slowed down a bit. Again, I thank you for your comment it has given me something to think about.
