Mustard Seeds
Jesus proposed a parable to the crowds.
"The Kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed
that a person took and sowed in a field.
It is the smallest of all the seeds,
yet when full-grown it is the largest of plants.
It becomes a large bush,
and the 'birds of the sky come and dwell in its branches.'"
So, illustrated above is a mature mustard bush. This plant begins from a seed that is little more than a speck and yet, given the right conditions, it grows into a fairly large bush or maybe you could call it a small tree. Some specimens can grow up to thirty feet tall although a twenty-foot height would be much more typical. Jesus says that this bush can be compared to the kingdom of heaven. What does He mean by that?
Think of the beginning of this tree. It is started by a seed about the same size as the period that ends this sentence. It is nothing much to look at as it is cast off onto the ground where it begins to grow. It first appears to be a weed amid the crops and it is not much to look at. If left to grow it grows into a large bush where the birds of the air can alight and find rest. So what Jesus is saying to us is that His Kingdom will come even if it seems to come slowly and that when it arrives, there shall be room for all.
Please remember the Holy Souls in Purgatory.
