Okay, I admit it. I am one of the millions of American men addicted to technology. I don't mean that you will see me riding the elevator with my nose buried in my phone and I do not play with the phone while eating dinner with my wife, that's what TV is for!
The other day, my computer went dump city and it was going to take me a couple of days to procure a new one. I love writing in my blog. Some people write for others, I write for myself. I am pleased that some folks read my blog and I would be a liar if I told you otherwise! But, during the dark ages, you know the three days I was offline, I did some thinking. How do we reconcile our use of modern technology with our Christian faith?
Everything in this world belongs to God and He allows us to use it. We can use things for good or for evil. We can use our computer to watch pornographic movies or we can use it to learn about our faith and help other to learn as well. It is our choice. But, have we crossed some invisible line? Do we depend on our technology more than we do God? Is our smart phone more dependable than God? Hardly!
Next time you pick up your smart phone, think about what you are doing. Is texting someone or calling them on the phone appropriate? Would a personal visit be better? When you are writing a complaint do you exercise charity or do you hide behind your hard drive? Anyone can write a flamer, it is the considerate person that crafts a complaint in such a way that you get your point across without beating someone up by proxy.
Our savior said we are to love one another. He did not add an exception for electronic communications. We can spread peace through our words and believe you me, the written word is so powerful it could be classified as a weapon of mass destruction. So be a good Catholic Christian and carry your morality with you when you log on. Carry your charity in your fingers when you write an email and by all means keep your eyes fixed on Jesus. Pretend he can see everything that you do...oh wait, He can!
Michael the Lesser will be commenting on the daily readings again starting Saturday morning. Until then, God Bless.
The poor souls need your help. Please say a couple of prayers for them tonight.
